Mercy Medical Center’s Sedlacek Treatment Center was founded by nuns in the 1970s in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It has been offering outpatient substance abuse treatment for more than 35 years and though the Sedlacek Center has a strong background in religion its contemporary programs are not especially religious. Sedlacek’s primary offerings currently include a four-to-six-week Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and extended outpatient treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at the Sedlacek Center begins with an assessment that informs a client’s individualized treatment plan. Once in the program, IOP clients spend their time attending group a minimum of three days a week, for three hours per day. The IOP meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10 am and 1 pm and between 3:30 and 6:30 pm. Once clients complete their individualized month or month-and-a-half cycle in the IOP they may step down into extended treatment. Upon that step down clients may reduce their attendance to two days a week or attend six hours weekly. The same outpatient services are offered as a separate program to adolescents between 13 and 18 years of age.

Sedlacek is equipped to provide those diagnosed with co-occurring disorders with proper dual diagnosis support in the form of specialized groups and medication management. No involvement in 12-step principles is expected while in the four-to-six-week Sedlacek IOP or in extended outpatient treatment. Sedlacek clients do have the option of taking part in a family program free of charge.

All counselors at Sedlacek are Master’s-level LCSWs, licensed mental health workers, MFTs and CADCs.
